Interfaces between Magnonics and Phononics

  • Volodymyr Kruglyak
  • Maciej Krawczyk
  • Thomas Hayward

Keywords: magnonics, phononics, magneto-acoustics

Magnonics and phononics, dealing with excitations of the magnetic and atomic order, respectively, have both recently emerged as exciting research directions in wave physics, solid state physics and technology. The goal of this colloquium is to explore opportunities for combining the most exciting aspects of physical acoustics and magnonics so as to create a new class of hybrid radio-frequency metamaterials and devices. The low propagation losses of phonons combined with the tunability, non-volatility and chirality of magnonic devices promise new physical effects and technical functionalities far beyond those obtainable in the constituent systems in isolation.

Specific topics covered by this colloquium may include (but are not limited to)

  • control of acoustic waves using magnonic structures,
  • control of spin waves using elastic strain,
  • magneto-acoustic metamaterials,
  • interaction of acoustic waves with magnetic textures,
  • acoustically induced magnetic switching,
  • ultrafast magnon-phononic phenomena.
